CHESTER, Pa. — The Widener men's volleyball team came away with a thrilling four-set win over Cairn, topping the Highlanders, 25-13, 20-25, 25-20, 25-23, on Wednesday night at Schwartz Athletic Center.
With the win, the Pride are now 2-3 on the season. The Blue and Gold snapped a three-match losing streak following a season-opening win over Drew.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST CAIRN
- The Pride dominated the first set, racing out to a 14-5 lead and never looking back. In the Pride's five matches this season, they have won the opening set three times.
- After the Highlanders won the second set, 25-20, to tie the match, the Pride won the third set by the same score after fending off Cairn by receiving a kill from Matthew Christ and a kill from Nick Poulson for the final two points of the game.
- The Pride won the fourth and final set in thrilling fashion. Clinging to a 24-23 lead, the Pride saw Dylan Beer notch a kill by hitting the ball just over two Cairn defenders and having it drop into the hole of the defense to win the match.
- Christ led the Pride with 15 kills. The first-year opposite hitter from Newfoundland, N.J. registered his second straight game with 15 kills or more after having 17 against Randolph-Macon last Saturday.
- Along with Christ's 15 kills, Widener setter Josh Matchett handed out 29 assists, including one on the match-winning kill by Beer.
- Defensively, Widener had 42 digs, marking the second consecutive match with 40 or more digs after having 41 against Randolph-Macon. Junior libero Cole Nagel tallied a game-high 14 digs for Widener.
