Men's Volleyball Faces Off Against Eastern In MAC Play

Pride play tough in four-set defeat to Eagles

CHESTER, Pa. - The Widener men's volleyball team battled hard against Eastern in their Middle Atlantic Conference match, but it was the Eagles who came away with a 26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 25-19 victory on Tuesday night at Schwartz Athletic Center. 

With the loss, the Pride dropped to 3-5 on the season and 0-2 in MAC play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST EASTERN 
  • Matthew Christ had another solid performance for the Pride, tallying 14 kills. The first-year from Newfoundland, N.J. is currently fourth in the MAC in kills per set with 3.32.  
  • Josh Matchett led the Pride in assists with 28. The junior setter currently ranks eighth in the MAC in assists with 211. 
  • The Pride were in a back-and-forth battle with the Eagles in the first set, exchanging points with them for the majority of the time. There were 20 ties and eight lead changes in the set. The Pride held a 24-23 lead in the set after scoring off an Eastern service error, but the Eagles tallied three points in a row to win the game. 
  • After Eastern won the second set, the Pride kept the match alive by going on a 10-5 run to rally from an 18-15 deficit to win the third set. Matchett had two kills during the run, including the final point of the set. 
  • In the fourth game, the Pride played even with the Eagles at the beginning, as they were tied at 6. However, Eastern went on a 14-7 run to take a 20-13 lead and rode that momentum to win the match. 
UP NEXT 
Widener will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Owings Mills, Md. to face MAC foe Stevenson in its first road match of the season. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
