WASHINGTON – A day after knocking off the No. 1 team in the country, the Widener baseball team held a one-run lead in the ninth inning against Marymount, but wound up allowing a walk-off two-run home run to drop a 6-5 heartbreaker to the Saints on Sunday at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy.
The loss put the Pride at 1-5 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MARYMOUNT
- Trailing, 4-3, through eight innings, the Pride managed to take a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth inning after scoring two runs. Alex Savkov scored the first run after scoring on a throwing error following Tommy McParland's sacrifice bunt, then Kyle Brex had an RBI single to give the Pride the lead.
- In the bottom of the ninth, Widener managed to get one out, but lost its bid for a second consecutive win after surrendering a two-run homer to the Saints.
- Brex led the Pride at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Bryce Fremgen also hit a homer for WU in the defeat, smacking a solo shot in the sixth inning.
- First-year starter Sean Davis had a solid debut for the Pride, allowing only two earned runs on three hits while striking out nine.

The Pride will travel to Florida for their annual spring break trip. The Pride will play six games over the course of five days, starting next Saturday with a doubleheader against Calvin University. Game one will begin at 3 p.m., with the nightcap to follow at 6 p.m.
