Baseball Sweeps Calvin to Start Florida Trip

Pride score 19 runs against the Knights

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Widener baseball team began its spring break trip in the Sunshine state by sweeping a doubleheader against Calvin University on the first day of the RussMatt Invitational on Saturday at NorthEast Regional Park.
 
The Pride won the first game, 6-2, then took the nightcap by a 13-4 count. The pair of wins put the Pride's record at 3-5 on the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST CALVIN IN GAME 1
  • The Pride jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI double from Justin Costanzo and a RBI single from Brandon Reis.
  • Then, the Pride tacked on another run in the third inning on a RBI single by Kyle Brex and three more in the sixth on a two-run single from Bryce Fremgen and Brex scoring a run following Costanzo being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
  • Jason Morgan led the Pride at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Brex and Fremgen each had two hits for the Pride.
  • Senior starter Liam Nihill earned the victory on the mound, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out six and walking one in five innings.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST CALVIN IN GAME 2
  • Trailing, 2-1, through two innings, the Pride tied the game in the third inning after Anthony Boccio scored on a Morgan sacrifice fly to center field.
  • Then, the Blue and Gold broke out the bats by driving in three runs in the fourth, four in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh.
  • In the fourth inning, Tommy McParland gave the Pride the lead by bringing home the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly to left. Brex followed McParland with a RBI double and Boccio knocked in Brex on a single.
  • In the fifth, Alex Savkov had a RBI double and Matt Samson followed with a two-run triple to give the Pride an 8-2 lead. Samson scored on a sacrifice from Jimmy Crew to make it 9-2.
  • In the sixth, Morgan pushed across a run on a single with the bases loaded. Then, Samson hit a two-run single to make it 12-3. 
  • In the seventh, Andrew Yates hit a pinch-hit solo home run for the final run.
  • Samson finished 2-for-3 with four RBI. Boccio batted a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
  • Zachary Coluccio picked up his first collegiate win on the hill, as we yielded only three earned runs on five hits while fanning 11.
UP NEXT 
The Pride will take on Pennsylvania foe Moravian on Sunday in Auburndale, Fla. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
