OWINGS MILLS, Md. - A high scoring first quarter set the Widener women's basketball team up for success and it kept the momentum en route to a 71-61 victory over MAC Commonwealth foe Stevenson for its seventh straight win on Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
With the win, the Pride now have an overall record of 15-6 and have improved to 11-3 in MAC Commonwealth play. The Pride are tied for second in the MAC Commonwealth with York.
Five players for the Blue and Gold posted double figures.
Charlotte Stern led the way with 14 points,
Jordan D'Ambrosio had 13,
Erin Phelan had 12, and
Nicole Barnes and
Jasmine Franklin scored 10 apiece for the Pride.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST STEVENSON
- The momentum was set in the first quarter as the Pride outscored the Mustangs, 23-13. The Pride saw seven of their eight players who played in the game score in the quarter, with Stern and D'Ambrosio leading the way with five points apiece.
- After a close second quarter, the Pride extended their lead to 49-28 through the third quarter to build enough of an advantage to secure the win.
- Defensively, the Pride totaled 40 rebounds and 10 steals, keeping the Mustangs offense at bay. Every player on Widener roster tallied at least one rebound this afternoon. Charlotte Stern and Erin Phelan led the team with six rebounds each.
- From the free throw line, the Pride shot 77.8 percent, a higher percentage than their season average of 66.9.
- By scoring 71 points, the Pride still have the No. 1 ranked offense in the MAC Commonwealth, as they increased their average to 68.1 points per game.
