UNION, N.J. – The Widener baseball team scored five runs in the first inning, but could not hold onto the lead as it lost a 6-5 contest to Kean on Opening Day on Thursday afternoon at Jim Hynes Stadium at Kean University.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST KEAN
- The Pride jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first after receiving a pair of RBI singles from Bryce Fremgen and Justin Costanzo. They also saw Matt Samson bring home a run after he was hit by a pitch with the bases load, and Alex Savkov and Tommy McParland each brought in a run after they drew walks with the bases full.
- Unfortunately, the Cougars chipped away at the Pride lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first, one in the fourth inning, one in the sixth and two in the ninth to win it. The final run came on a walk-off walk.
- Costanzo, Fremgen, Nick Barenz, Kyle Brex, and Brandon Reis each had one hit to lead the Pride at the plate. Costanzo, Fremgen, Barenz, Brex and McParland each scored a run in the game.

The Pride will travel to Winchester, Va. on Saturday to take on Shenandoah in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for noon, with the nightcap following at 3 p.m.
