WINCHESTER, Va. – The Widener baseball team scored 11 total runs in two games, but it could not muster enough runs in each game to defeat Shenandoah during their doubleheader Saturday at Bodie Grim Field.
The Pride lost the first game, 8-5, then dropped the nightcap by an 8-6 count to fall to 0-3 on the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST SHENANDOAH IN GAME 1
- The Pride jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the top of the third inning. The Pride received an RBI triple from Aaron Nuble and an RBI double from Brandon Robinson in the bottom of the second and tacked on their third run in the top of the third on an RBI single from Bryce Fremgen.
- Unfortunately, the Hornets pushed across four runs in the bottom of the third, three more in the fourth, and one in the fifth to take a five-run lead.
- The Blue and Gold managed to get the lead down to three after Justin Costanzo hit a solo home run in the sixth inning and Nuble hit an RBI single in the seventh, but that would be as close as they could get.
- Nuble led the Pride at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST SHENANDOAH IN GAME 2
- The Pride fell into a 7-0 hole through the first three innings after the Hornets scored four runs in the first and three more in the third.
- Widener got two runs in the top of the fourth after Fremgen scored on a Brandon Reis fielder's choice and Nuble hitting an RBI double.
- After Shenandoah scratched one more run in the bottom of the fourth, the Pride made a valiant comeback effort by scoring four runs in the last two innings, including three in the seventh. Costanzo hit a solo homer in the sixth and Brandon Robinson blasted a three-run homer in the seventh as a pinch hitter.
- Costanzo paced the Pride at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with his homer, two runs, and a walk. Nuble added two hits for Widener in the defeat.

The Pride will travel to Salisbury, Md. next Saturday to face the top two teams in the country in No. 1 Salisbury and No. 2 SUNY-Cortland. The Pride will face SUNY-Cortland in their first game at 10 a.m., then will take on Salisbury in their second game at 2 p.m.
