CHESTER, Pa. – Widener University Director of Athletics
Jack Shafer has recently announced
Greg Spicka as Director of Athletic Communications.
"We are very happy to welcome
Greg Spicka to Widener Athletics in his new role as our Director of Athletics Communications," said Shafer. "Greg brings a wealth of knowledge to our social media, technology, and broadcast operations. His expertise within social media, broadcast, technology, and writing across various platforms will continue to add to our ability to promote our student-athletes success, our teams, and our academic accomplishments."
Most recently, Spicka was hired as a part time staff member to assist in revamping Widener Athletics' Gameday and Event Management operations while assisting in the Athletic Communications Department with statistics and day to day operations.
Post-graduation from Scranton, Spicka continued his education here at Widener where he received a Masters of Business Administration while serving as the Graduate Assistant Coach for the Men's and Women's Swim Team. During his two years as graduate assistant, Spicka helped navigate the team through a COVID season, continued to build the program's depth, maintained the school's automatic timing system, and coached 35 plus swimmers.
During his time at Scranton, Spicka spent his four years as a student-athlete for the men's swimming and diving program. The breaststroke specialist helped the team to a second place finish (2017), two third place finishes (2018, 2019), and a fourth place finish (2020).
Outside of the pool, Spicka spent three years working in the Sports Information Department. While assisting the directors, he helped stat call and input all NCAA sports hosted by the University and assisted in staffing needs for Gameday Operations. Over the course of his four years, he helped with operations and staffing for the 2018, 19, and 22 Division III NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament and the 2019 Division III NCAA Field Hockey First Round which were hosted by Scranton.
Heavily involved with swimming, Spicka also spends time volunteering for USA Swimming as a certified official for both local and national events. As an official, Spicka helps oversee a fair and equitable competition and ensures a smoothly run meet. The most notable meets he has been selected for are the 2022 NCAA Division I National Championships, USA Swimming International Team Trials, and USA Swimming Junior Nationals. He has also seen the coaching side where he spent the past summer coaching the long course national team for the Madison Area Y.M.C.A.
The Morris Plains, N.J. native graduated from the University of Scranton in 2020 with a Bachelor in Finance and a Masters in Business Administration from Widener University in 2022.
Spicka is taking over responsibilities within the Athletic Communications Department after former director Anthony Spaulding stepped down upon receiving a job offer at LaSalle University.
