PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving prep sometimes get in the way of the purpose of Thanksgiving; gratitude, appreciation, thankfulness, selflessness, etc. On Saturday, November 19
th, the Widener baseball team lent a helping hand at The Philadelphia Walk to Defeat ALS.
The ALS Association is a nonprofit corporation based in Washington D.C. with Chapters spread across the country. The ALS Association helps raise awareness and bring support to people and families affected by the rare disease. ALS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a neurological disease that affects muscle control and nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain.
On November 19
th, the Philadelphia Chapter hosted a walk to bring awareness and raise funds to support the research and development of a cure. During the walk, 20 Widener baseball players and head coach
Kevin Burdick volunteered their Saturday to aid in set up, break down, and as course guides. As course guides, the players were spread along the course to help cheer on, direct, and support the participants in their walk to defeat ALS. In their efforts, the Pride players assisted a successful ALS walk that raised over $463,000.
As all of our Thanksgiving festivities come to an end, take a moment from all the fast pace prepping and family fun to remember to be mindful of the Thanksgiving purpose.
