CHESTER, Pa. - The Widener University men's volleyball team opened the 2022 season with a dominating win, sweeping Drew, 25-15, 25-18, 25-17, on Tuesday night at Schwartz Athletic Center.
First-year
Matthew Christ led the way with 11 kills, six aces and seven digs for the Pride, who notched their second season-opening victory in program history after also doing it in 2020. The win in straight sets marked the first time the Pride opened the season with a sweep.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST DREW
- The Pride dominated the first game, as they led the entire time in the set. The Pride jumped out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back en route to taking the first game.
- In the second game, the Pride and the Rangers went back and forth with each other. But, the Pride broke an 11-all tie by going on a 14-7 run to take the set.
- In the third game, the Pride led wire-to-wire as well. Christ paced the Blue and Gold with five of his 11 kills in the set, including the one to clinch the match.
- Joshua Matchett also had a standout night for the Pride, dishing out 30 assists. Matchett's 30 assists marked the seventh time in his career that he had 30 or more assists in a match.
- Dylan Beer provided quality defense for the Pride, making a game-high three blocks.

Widener will host Kean next Tuesday in another non-conference match. Match is set for 7:30 p.m.
