GRANTHAM, Pa. –
Jared Peters scored 15 points, including the 1,000th of his career, to help the Widener men's basketball team earn an 82-73 win over Messiah on Monday night in MAC Commonwealth action at Hitchcock Arena.
With 6:50 left in the first half, Peters knocked down a three-pointer from the left corner off a pass from
Pat Holden to become the 30th player in Pride history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. The graduate student from Shillington, Pa. Currently ranks 27th on the all-time scoring list with 1,012 points after surpassing Markiese Merceir (1,010 from 1998-99, 2000-03), Elijah Boyd (1,005 from 2016-20), and current assistant coach
Connor Laverty (1,000 from 2016-20).
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MESSIAH
- Along with Peters' milestone moment, the Pride received a complete team effort, as Holden, Steven Matlack, Kenny Lewis and Matt Daulerio each scored in double figures. Matlack led the Pride with 18 points, while Holden had 17, Lewis added 12 and Daulerio chipped in 10, respectively.
- In the first half, Matlack led the charge for the Pride, scoring 15 points on five three-pointers to help them take a 41-38 lead into halftime. In the half, the Pride put together a 20-0 run to take a 22-7 lead with 12:16 remaining in the half, with Matlack hitting two of his threes during that stretch.
- In the second half, Holden and Daulerio paced the Pride, as they both scored 10 points to score 20 of the team's 41 points in the frame.
- Widener made the Falcons pay when they committed turnovers, as the Pride scored 19 points off them.
- The Pride also took advantage of the fast break, outscoring the Falcons, 13-7, in that part of the game.
