CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener women's basketball team played tough against York, holding a two-point lead through three quarters before the Spartans rallied for a 60-54 win on Wednesday night at Schwartz Athletic Center to remain undefeated in MAC Commonwealth play.
With the loss, the Pride fell to 2-2 in the MAC Commonwealth and 6-4 overall. As for York, it leads the MAC Commonwealth at 4-0 in conference play and it sits at 9-1 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST YORK
- Gianna Samuels and Erin Phelan paced the Pride in the defeat. Samuels came off the bench to lead the team with 12 points while Phelan finished with 11 points.
- After trailing by as many as six points in the first quarter, the Pride managed to take a 24-23 lead at halftime and a 46-44 lead through the third quarter. Samuels provided a spark for the Pride in the second quarter, scoring five of the team's 13 points in the frame, while Phelan provided seven of the Pride's 22 points in the third quarter.
- In the third quarter, the Pride shot 60 percent from both the field (9-for-15) and from three-point range (3-for-5).
- Unfortunately, the Pride made only one basket in the fourth quarter, which occurred during a 10-2 run by York that allowed them to take the lead for good.
- Nicole Barnes filled out the stat sheet, as she led the Pride with 10 rebounds, four assists, and three steals while scoring nine points. The Garnet Valley, Pa. native currently leads the MAC Commonwealth in assists per game (4.1), ranks third in the conference in steals per game (2.8) and sits in ninth in rebounds per game (7.9).
