CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University women's basketball team broke open a tight game early in the second quarter as the Pride came away with a 77-56 win against the Hood Blazers in a MAC Commonwealth matchup on Sunday afternoon.
"It was an all-around team win today," said head coach,
Alisa Kintner. "Our defense in the second half was exactly what we needed going into the second half of the season.
GAME NOTES
- Devan Rimmer led the Pride with 22 points, her eighth game this season with 20 or more.
- Kyra Schenk posted 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
- Jasmine Franklin followed up her career-high at Albright with eight more against Hood. She also had a season-best six boards.
- Nicole Barnes was a defensive stopper for Widener, swiping a career-high six steals.
- 11 different players scored for the Blue and Gold and every student-athlete logged at least three minutes.
- WU committed 14 or less turnovers for the eighth consecutive game.
- The bench played a key role, coming up with 30 points and 15 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams came out of the gate sluggish with Hood taking a 9-6 lead four minutes into the opening frame. After the Pride battled back to go up by five on a trey by Rimmer, the Blazers closed the quarter strong, scoring eight of the final 10 points. The strong end to the first carried into the second for Hood who took a 20-18 lead at the 8:53 mark of the second. Widener responded with an 18-2 run, going 6-for-9 from the floor. The Blazers made a brief run at the end of the half, cutting the Pride lead to 38-30 at intermission.
Widener started the second half strong and outscored Hood 16-8 in the third quarter before pulling away in the fourth. Rimmer scored 11 of her points after the break to help the Pride effort.
