IMMACULATA, Pa. –
Melissa Koch provided late-game heroics for the Widener University women's soccer team on Wednesday afternoon, scoring in the 80th minute and lifting the Pride to a 2-1 victory over the Immaculata Mighty Macs.
This marked the third win in a row for WU and the first time since 2009 that the program started a season 3-0.
Highlights
- Koch tallied her second goal in as many games. Alyssa Dionisio was credited with the assist.
- Isabella Hill notched her third and fourth points of the year, beating the Immaculata keeper after receiving a pass from Lexi Slusher.
- The Pride outshot the Mighty Macs 9-6.
- The Blue and Gold defense surrendered zero corner kicks.
- Liv Farwell picked up the first win of her sophomore season between the pipes.
How it happened
The match was deadlocked at zero for the first 17 minutes. After an offside call on the Pride, the Blue and Gold regained possession, leading to Hill's goal and giving Widener a 1-0 advantage. Strong defense on both ends to close out the half kept the margin at one heading into the break.
Immaculata evened the score right before the 72nd minute, leaving plenty of time on the clock for either team to take the lead. Almost exactly 10 minutes (80:01) before the final whistle, senior Slusher and freshman Koch connected for the game-winning goal. The Pride backline held the Macs to just one shot for the remainder of the contest, securing the victory for Widener.
