CHESTER, Pa. –
Chris Randle ran for three touchdowns and the Widener University football team was a plus-three in takeaways as the Pride claimed a 41-21 Senior Day victory against King's in a Middle Atlantic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon.
Â
"I am happy for our seniors to get a win on senior day," said head coach
Mike Barainyak. Â "They have battled adversity and kept fighting. They have done a great job building a foundation for our program to build upon moving forward. Today we made plays in all three phases and it was a big program win against a tough opponent."
Â
The Pride jumped on the board first with a 30-yard field goal from
Trevor Mavromihalis just more than three minutes into the game. King's took most of the remainder of the quarter with its ensuing drive, scoring on a TD pass to make it 7-3. Both teams punted on their next possession. When Widener got the ball back midway through the second half, it took one play, a 48-yard pass from
Sean McGaughey to
Ryan Gallagher, to give the Blue and Gold a 10-7 lead. A pair of rushing touchdowns, one each by
Tahir Cruse and Randle spotted WU a 24-7 lead at halftime.
Â
King's opened the second half with a 75-yard drive for a touchdown before the Pride responded with a career-long 38-yard field goal from Mavromihalis. The Monarchs cut into the Widener lead early in the fourth quarter and got the ball back after a WU punt. After moving the ball to its own 45,
Owen Kramer forced a fumble and recovered. Four plays later, Randle scampered five yards for his second score of the day. Late in the quarter, Kramer sacked the King's QB, forcing another fumble, this time recovered by
Mike Pawlowski, leading to a possession that produced Randle's third TD of the day.
