@Widener_FB Throws a Scare Into #9/11 DelVal

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Widener University football team played toe-to-toe with #9/11 Delaware Valley on Saturday afternoon before falling to the Aggies 28-21 in a Middle Atlantic Conference contest.
 
The teams traded scores in the first half as after DelVal posted the first points of the game, Widener battled back a little more than four minutes later as Sean McGaughey capped a 10-play, 75-yard drive with a 10-yard TD pass to James Gillespie. Neither team scored in the next 18 minutes before the Aggies used the long ball to go up 14-7. The Pride once again came back, going 83 yards as McGaughey again found Gillespie, this time from two yards out on the final play of the half, knotting things at 14-14 heading to intermission.
 
In the second half, DelVal scored midway through the third. Widener was moving the ball halfway through the fourth when an interception was returned for a score, putting DVU up 28-14. The Pride had a final gasp as McGaughey connected with Ty Holbert for a score with just less than four minutes to go.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • McGaughey finished the day with 218 yards and three TD.
  • Gillespie pulled in six catches for 79 yards and two scores. Holbert went for six grabs, 75 yards, and a TD.
  • Matt Russo posted 11 tackles and had his second interception of the year.
  • Michael Raczak averaged 40.4 yards on seven punts with two inside the 20 and two of 50+ yards.
  • As a team, the Blue and Gold rushed for 82 yards, the third highest total against the Aggies this season. The 21 points scored were the second most for a DVU opponent.
 
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING
  • McGaughey finishes the regular season with 3,264 yards passing, the third highest total in program history. His 31 TD are tied for fourth.
  • Gillespie has 75 catches for 1,326 yards, and 17 TD. His yardage total and touchdown catches are second in single season for Widener, while the receptions are third.

Postseason action for the Pride is yet to be determined and will be announced in the next couple of days.
