ANNVILLE, Pa. – The Widener University women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 65-63 decision in double overtime to the Lebanon Valley Dutchmen in a MAC Commonwealth contest on Wednesday night.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Devan Rimmer led the Pride with 21 points, going 11-of-13 from the free throw line. In the process, she played all 50 minutes in the game, the only player who did not take a breather in the contest.
- Kyra Schenk recorded a career-high for the second straight game and her fifth double-figure scoring contest of the season, posting 15 points.
- Widener held a 19-8 advantage at the free throw line.
- It was the first game for the Pride with multiple overtimes since a 77-73 win against Stevenson on February 3, 2018.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams got off to a bit of a slow start as tough shooting and turnovers kept the game 4-4 midway through the first frame. A jumper from Nicole Barnes at the 5:22 mark of the quarter began a 9-0 run for the Pride, opening a 13-4 lead at the end of the stanza. During the span, the Blue and Gold held the Dutchmen to 0-for-4 shooting and forced four turnovers.
- Lebanon Valley roared back, beginning the second quarter with 12 straight points to take a 16-13 lead in the first four minutes of the period.
- Finding its legs, Widener battled back, using a post presence, powered by six points in the period from Kyra Schenk as WU took a 26-25 lead into halftime.
- The close battle continued as the second half began as after the Pride went up 30-27, LVC fought back, taking a 35-32 edge. Widener moved to push the ball inside, drawing contact and going to the line. The Blue and Gold shot 10-for-12 at the stripe in the period to take a 42-38 lead into the final quarter.
- To start the fourth, WU looked like it was starting to pull away, going up six before the Dutchmen posted back-to-back baskets on its way to knotting the game at 51-51. Each team missed a chance in the final six seconds as the game went to overtime tied at 53-53.
- In the extra frame Widener held off a last second play from LVC to force a second overtime as the teams set up for a second five minute post-regulation possession, tied at 59-59.
- During the second overtime, both teams battled before the Dutchmen scored the eventual winning basket with 22 seconds left.
