Tyler Drews finished just an assist shy of a triple-double as the Widener University men's basketball team won its third straight game, downing Hood 88-61 in a MAC Commonwealth matchup on Saturday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Drews recorded his first career double-double with 17 points and a career-high 11 rebounds to go along with nine helpers.
- Ryan McMahon also posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, adding six assists.
- Jared Peters led all scorers in the game with 18 points, shooting 5-for-7 from beyond the arc.
- Jalen Howard and Elijah Boyd also cracked double figures with 12 and 11 respectively.
- The game marked the third straight contest Widener won the battle of the boards, holding a 43-41 advantage in rebounding.
- Nine different players found the scoring column for the Pride.
- It is the first time since 2010-11 the Blue and Gold starts MAC Commonwealth play with a 3-1 record.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hood jumped out to an early lead, going up 11-2 on a pair of free throws just less than three minutes into the game.
- The Blazers maintained the edge until the midway mark of the half, when Widener went on an 8-0 run, capped by a Boyd free throw to take a 17-16 edge.
- With the score tied at 21-21 at the five minute mark, the Pride used a push to end the half, scoring 13 of the final 20 points, taking a 34-27 lead into the break.
- Still a close game at 44-40 following a Hood layup with 14:27 to go, WU took control with a 19-5 run in the next six minutes, opening a 63-45 advantage.
