CHESTER, Pa. –
Tyler Drews led all scorers with 30 points as the Widener University men's basketball team won its fourth MAC Commonwealth game in a row as the Pride downed the Lycoming Warriors 84-71 on Saturday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
- It was Drews third game this season of 30 or more points. He shot 6-for-9 from beyond the arc in the contest, also grabbing four rebounds and dishing four assists.
- Connor Laverty posted 15 in the contest with a team-high tying seven rebounds.
- Elijah Boyd scored 11 in the game. Jared Peters dropped in 10 off the bench.
- Ryan McMahon had a season-high with 10 assists.
- Kenny Lewis had a strong game coming off the pine with eight points and seven rebounds.
- As a team, Widener shot well overall from three-point range, hitting 9-of-19 shots from long distance, good for 47.4 percent. Coming into the game, Lycoming had held teams to 29.9 percent from three.
- The Blue and Gold also posted its highest free throw percentage of the season, connecting on 90.5 percent (19-of-21) of its attempts from the line.
- WU won the rebounding battle for the fourth consecutive contest as well, holding a 35-33 edge on the boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pride got things started from the opening tip as on its first possession, Drews hit his first three of the night. A steal and score, also by Drews, pushed Widener to a 5-0 lead in the first 41 seconds.
- Lycoming responded and battled back, taking a 23-18 lead with just less than eight minutes left in the half.
- With the score tied 26-26 at the five minute mark, Widener used a 12-4 to end the period, taking a 38-0 lead into halftime.
- The two teams traded shots to open the second half. The Warriors kept themselves in the game, trailing by just nine with 12:05 to play before WU took over, scoring 18 of the next 25 points, opening its largest lead of the night at 72-52 at 4:18.
