Collective Effort Lifts @WUWBB Over Swarthmore College

CHESTER, Pa. – Four different players finished in double-figures on Tuesday night, leading the Widener University women's basketball team to 76-61 victory over Swarthmore College. WU is off to the best start in program history since the beginning of the NCAA era.

The Blue and Gold controlled the entire game, never giving up its lead. 21 points in the first quarter on 40 percent shooting lifted the Pride to a comfortable advantage going into the second. Seven players contributed to the scoresheet in the second quarter, including four points from McKenzie McCracken. WU hit 12 of its 14 free throws in the first half.

Emily Hardy and Devan Rimmer led the charge in the third quarter, both of them netting four points. Nicole Barnes stepped up in the fourth, hitting a three-pointer and a layup. Madison Ireland also got a three to fall in the final quarter. Free throws in the final minutes sealed the win.

By the numbers:
  • Rimmer scored 20+ points for the fourth straight game and fifth time in six games.
  • Ireland matched a career-high in assists with 11. She also had 11 points to complete the double-double.
  • Hardy shined on both ends of the floor. The senior had 11 points (on 71 percent shooting) and 10 rebounds to go along with her two steals and two blocks.
  • Erin Phelan recorded a solid 13 and eight.
  • Nicole Barnes was a menace on the boards tonight. The guard grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds in 22 minutes.
  • Jasmine Franklin added some extra offense off the bench with her six points.
  • WU created second-chance scoring opportunities all night, pulling in 18 offensive rebounds.
  • Widener shot an impressive 81 percent from the line.
  • Bully-ball was factor as 46 of the Pride's points came in the paint.

Widener will return to MAC Commonwealth action, facing off against Lycoming at the Schwartz Center on Saturday, December 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
