READING, Pa. – The Widener University women's basketball team secured its first conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Alvernia Golden Wolves 71-61.
The Pride established a four point lead by the end of the first quarter.
Mackenzie McCracken and
Emma Gardy each hit a three-pointer in the first 10 minutes. Alvernia narrowed the gap to one in the second quarter, but the WU defense buckled down and Widener carried a four-point advantage into the half.
The Widener offense erupted in the third quarter, putting up 19 points.
Devan Rimmer scored 12 to go along with her two steals in the quarter.
Kyra Schenk had three rebounds and two points at the end of the quarter, creating a 13-point margin. Though the Pride was outscored in the final quarter, it never lost its lead. Free throws by Rimmer in the last minute iced it.
Game Highlights:
- Rimmer was the leading scorer for Widener. She posted a season-high 23 points on 61.5 percent shooting.
- Erin Phelan finished with 14 points and was perfect from the free-throw line, going six-for-six.
- McCracken was the third Pride player in double-figures. She has 10 points and shot 50 percent from three-point territory.
- Madison Ireland showcased her passing skills, racking up seven assists
- Emily Hardy recorded a solid seven points and five rebounds.
- WU shot 80 percent from the foul line.
- The defense forced 20 turnovers.
- The 20 assists by the team is the second most on the season for the Blue and Gold
