WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Widener University women's basketball team won its opening game of the McDaniel Tip-Off Classic on Saturday night, defeating Eastern Mennonite University by a score of 68-63.
It was a tightly contested game all night with four different lead changes. At the end of quarter one, the Pride trailed by four. Eastern Mennonite maintained that advantage at the half. Widener erupted in the third quarter on both ends of the floor, outscoring the Royals 16-5. Despite a valiant comeback effort from EMU in the fourth quarter, WU was able hold on to its lead.
By The Numbers:
- Devan Rimmer led the way in scoring with 16. Her defensive intensity complimented her offensive input as she recorded three steals.
- Madison Ireland set a career-high for total assists in a game with 11. The junior and 2017 All-Mac Commonwealth honoree also had 11 points for her first double-double of the year.
- Erin Phelan was the third member of the Pride in double figures. The freshman tallied 11 points to go along with her five rebounds and two blocks.
- Mackenzie McCracken had nine points and five boards.
- Off the bench, Nicole Barnes anchored the second unit with eight points in 24 minutes.
- As a team, the Blue and Gold was 14-16 from the charity stripe, continuing its impressive free-throw shooting.
- Widener out-rebounded Eastern Mennonite 42-38. Barnes secured six to lead the Pride.
- WU shot 33.3% from beyond the arc.

Widener will stay in Westminster, Md. for the second day McDaniel Tip-Off Classic. The Pride will go up against the Panthers of Ferrum College. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
