CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University women's basketball team opened its 2018-19 campaign on Sunday afternoon with 67-56 victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland. Three players finished in double figures, while the defense forced 23 turnovers.
By The Numbers:
- Devan Rimmer led all scorers with 18 points and was perfect from the free throw line, going five-for-five. She also had five steals.
- Madison Ireland stuffed the stat sheet, tallying 11 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
- Erin Phelan made significant contributions in her first collegiate game. The freshman had 10 points and only one turnover in 26 minutes of play.
- As a team, Widener shot 83% from the charity stripe, going 19-23.
- The Pride was sharing the rock, compiling 14 assists throughout the game
- Second chances played a major role in WU's success, as the team notched 11 offensive boards
First Quarter Notes:
- Rimmer scored four points and delivered an assist to Phelan
- Nicole Barnes and Brooke Bachtle added some extra offense off the bench
- Widener had five steals in the quarter
Second Quarter Notes:
- WU shot 52.9% throughout the quarter, while going four-for-five from beyond the arc
- Jasmine Franklin and Emma Gardy contributed to the Blue and Gold's 21-point lead at the end of the half, adding eight points in the quarter
Third Quarter Notes:
- St. Mary's narrowed the deficit, but WU outperformed the Seahawks on the glass, grabbing 11 rebounds.
- Six different Pride players scored to help Widener maintain its lead into the final quarter
Fourth Quarter Notes:
- St. Mary's cut the advantage to 10, but that was Widener's shortest lead of the game since the first quarter
- Free throws by Hardy, Phelan, and Ireland iced it for the Pride
