OWINGS MILLS, Md. –
Allison Gallagher netted a season-high 25 points, but it wasn't enough, as the Widener University women's basketball team was outlasted by the Stevenson University Mustangs on Saturday afternoon at the Owings Mills Gymnasium.
KEY STATS
- Gallagher led the offense with 25 points while pulling down six boards.
- Kyra Schenk had a season-high of 15 rebounds and tallied nine points.
- Nikki Petri scored three treys in the fourth quarter for nine points.
- Madison Ireland knocked down seven points while dishing eight assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams played a back-and-forth opening quarter with five lead changes and three ties. Down 5-0, freshman Schenk opened the scoring for the Pride by connecting on a layup. Another layup by Ireland helped cut the deficit to one, before Schenk knocked down a free throw to tie the game at five and eventually pull ahead. Widener maintained its lead until a layup by Morgan Jacobs put the Mustangs ahead, 13-12, to close out the quarter.
The second quarter belonged to the Mustangs, who outscored the visitors by a count of 21-13 and never looked back. Ireland made a free throw to tie the game at 20s, however, Jacobs answered with a shot from long range to make it 23-20 and give the Mustangs a lead they wouldn't surrender for the rest of the way.
Despite being down by nine at the beginning of the third quarter, Widener began to chip away with a Gallagher trifecta that brought the gap down to five. Down by three after a layup from
Emily Hardy, Schenk took a chance on a jumper to make it a one point game, but the ball rimmed out and the Mustangs were able to hold onto their lead heading into the fourth quarter.
A valiant comeback effort by Widener, which trailed by just seven after facing a double-digit deficit midway through the fourth quarter, would come up short. Petri sank three three-pointers and Gallagher contributed eight points in the effort.
