Ireland Scores Career-High 28 as Women's Basketball Rallies Against Albright

CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener University women's basketball team used a strong fourth quarter, propelling the Pride to a 77-70 victory against the Albright Lions in a MAC Commonwealth contest on Wednesday night.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Madison Ireland led the Pride with a career-high 28 points. She distributed them evenly, tallying 14 in each half.
  • Allison Gallagher had 14 points and a team-high tying eight rebounds.
  • Devan Rimmer netted 11 points.
  • Emma Gardy came up big for Widener with six points, knocking down a pair of threes.
 
FIRST QUARTER NOTES
  • The Pride got off to a slow start as the Lions opened the contest on a 13-6 run.
  • Widener found its touch from outside as three-pointers from Ireland and Petri sandwiched an Albright basket, as the Blue and Gold found itself down 15-12 at the end of the frame.
  • Neither team shot well in the frame as Widener connected on 5-of-18 attempts while the Lions were 6-for-16.
  • Ireland topped the Pride with five points.
 
SECOND QUARTER NOTES
  • The visitors started the second stanza the same way they did the first, going on a quick 5-1 run to take a 20-13 lead two minutes in.
  • The Pride chopped the lead to four before Albright extended it out to 34-25 with nine seconds left in the frame. Widener had the final say in the period as Emma Gardy knocked down a three at the buzzer to cut the edge to six at the break.
  • Ireland continued to lead the way with 10 points in the frame, giving her 14 for the half.
 
THIRD QUARTER NOTES
  • Albright steadily extended its lead through the opening few minutes of the frame, taking a 41-32 advantage at the 7:16 mark.
  • The Lions continued to hold Widener at arms' length until the end of the quarter when the Pride battled back, scoring five of the final seven points of the period to trail 57-51 at the end of the frame.
 
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES
  • Widener carried its strong end to the previous period into the final quarter, scoring the first seven points to take its first lead since 2-0.
  • Neither team held more than a two point edge for the next fuve minutes until Widener went on an 8-1 run to go up 73-68 with 2:26 left.
  • The Blue and Gold was able to close the game, picking up two clutch offensive rebounds in the final minute as well as connecting on four shots from the charity stripe to seal the win.

The Pride continues MAC Commonwealth play with a trip to Lycoming on Saturday, Dec. 9. Tipoff from Lamade Gymnasium in Williamsport, Pa. is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
