CHESTER, Pa. (Oct. 11, 2016) – Sophomore
Justin O'Brien (Carlisle, Pa.) scored his first career goal and freshman
DJ Reider (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) notched his first assist in leading the Widener University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Albright in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action on Tuesday evening at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.
Albright (2-9-2, MAC Commonwealth 0-4) nearly got on the board first when Steve Bien-Aime took a pass from Zachary Lahey and had an open look at the net from the top of the box, but the senior's shot attempt sailed wide left at the midway point of the opening frame. Widener then came back the other way and got the only marker it would need when Reider sent a cross in from the right side to O'Brien, who buried the ball into the upper 90 of the net in the 28th minute of action.
The Pride, who carried their 1-0 advantage into the recess, nearly doubled their lead in the second stanza. A boot by freshman
Antonio Marchio (Sinking Spring, Pa.) which was headed for the left corner, however, was cleared away by a Lion defender at the last moment. Anthony Parlato's shot attempt in the 77th minute for the potential equalizer graced off the crossbar, and the Pride would withstand a few other scoring chances to eventually hold on for the one-goal win.
Senior
Dave Sousa (Springfield, Pa.) picked up his 13th career shutout and second of the season between the pipes by making one save for Widener. Albright's Billy Mullen turned away three shots in an evenly matched contest that saw the teams attempt 11 shots apiece.
Widener (3-8-1, MAC Commonwealth 1-2) returns to the pitch to host reigning champion Lycoming on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. during Homecoming Weekend.
