CHESTER, Pa. (Jan. 26, 2015) – Junior
Melaney Heald (Georgetown, Del.) captured all three sprint freestyle events and swam on a winning relay to lead the Widener University women's swimming team to a convincing 177-83 victory over Arcadia on Monday at the Schwartz Center. The Pride concluded the evening having won five straight dual meets.
Heald was unstoppable in the three individual events she was entered in, beginning the evening with a time of 2:00.64 in the 200-yard freestyle. She followed that performance up by winning the 50 free in 26.19 seconds and the 100 free in 55.95. The junior concluded the meet by swimming the leadoff leg for the 200 free relay that touched the wall in 1:46.07 and also featured senior
Erin Neugebauer (Eden Prairie, Minn.), freshman
Jaclyn Hammill (East Greenville, Pa.) and senior captain
Kori Meighan (Holmes, Pa.).
Freshman
Lauren Griffith (Doylestown, Pa.) and sophomore
Liz O'Sullivan (Somers Point, N.J.) also put together a pair of winning performances for the Pride. Griffith was victorious in the 100 back and 100 fly with marks of 1:05.04 and 1:03.48, respectively, while O'Sullivan took the 200 fly and 500 free in 2:19.54 and 5:32.20. In addition, both athletes teamed up with Neugebauer and junior captain
Anna Pelligra (Manasquan, N.J.) to post a victorious time of 1:56.51 in the 200 medley relay and set the tone for the successful evening.
Widener (9-3, MAC 6-1) will look to win its third Middle Atlantic Conference title overall and first since 2011 when it travels to York, Pa. for the league's championship meet beginning on Feb. 11.
