FREDERICK, Md. (Mar. 28, 2015) – A four-goal performance by sophomore midfielder
Vince Marra (Morton, Pa.) propelled the Widener men's lacrosse team to a 13-2 drubbing of conference-foe Hood on Saturday at the Thomas Athletic Field.
With the win, Widener improves to 2-7 on the season and evens out at 1-1 in Commonwealth play. The loss takes Hood to 4-6 on the year and 0-2 in conference action.
After the first quarter was in the books, the contest seemed as if it would be a tight one as the scoreboard read 1-1. The Pride's score came via a goal by junior attacker
Tim Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) off a feed from sophomore attacker
Nick Striebich (Ellicott City, Md.), while the Blazers' Gio San Fillipo got them on the board.
That would be the only close quarter of the day as Widener entered halftime leading 5-1 after Marra rattled off three-straight, with the second tally coming off a helper by junior midfielder
Marc LaVine (Nashua, N.H.). Freshman midfielder
Patrick Richardson (Westville, N.J.) notched the final goal of the half on an unassisted effort with 2:19 left to play.
The second half saw more of the same action as the visitors outscored Hood 3-1 in the third quarter, and held them scoreless in the final period while registering five scores in the frame. LaVine, Marra, and Richardson sent home unassisted markers in the third quarter, while Taylor added two goals in the fourth along with LaVine, sophomore attacker
Tyler Schulte (Southhampton, N.J.), and freshman midfielder
David Dagessian (Marple Newtown, Pa.) who closed out the contest with his first career score.
Junior netminder
Tyler McClary (Galena, Ohio) earned his first win in goal, making five saves in his 30 minutes in cage.
The Pride held an overwhelming edge in shots at 44-22 and shots on goal at 26-9. The visitors scooped up 41 groundballs to Hood's 36, and successfully completed 21-22 clear attempts.
Widener returns home after a two-game stretch on the road for a match-up with conference-foe Alvernia. The contest is set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Apr. 1 at Leslie C. Quick Stadium in Chester, Pa.
