CHESTER, Pa. (Apr. 1, 2015) – Eleven different members of the Widener men's lacrosse team, led by a
Marc LaVine (Nashua, N.H.) hat-trick, notched goals in Wednesday night's 17-3 conference victory over Alvernia at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.
The Pride make it two-straight wins to improve to 3-7 on the year and 2-1 in Commonwealth action. The Crusaders dip to 3-8 on the season and 0-3 in conference play.
LaVine kicked off the scoring just 1:44 into the game as he beat the Alvernia goalie with an unassisted effort. Five minutes later, junior midfielder
Bryan Shields (Nazareth, Pa.) added an unassisted marker for his fourth of the season. LaVine and sophomore midfielder
Chris Sanchez (Flanders, N.J.) combined with two scores by junior attack
Tim Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) gave the blue and gold a 6-0 lead after the first quarter.
The home squad added another four in the second period to hold a 10-0 advantage at the intermission as Shields added another, along with freshman midfielder

Anthony Cipriano (Kendall Park, N.J.), and sophomore attacker
Tyler Schulte (Southhampton, N.J.).
Widener didn't slow down in the latter stanza. Just 27 seconds into the third quarter, sophomore attacker
Clint Sanders (Willow Grove, Pa.) gave his squad an 11-0 lead.
The Pride managed to hold the visitors off the board for the first 34:48 minutes of action before Benjamin Manning sent home a feed by Thomas Warwick to bring the score to 12-1. Widener's
David Dagessian (Marple Newtown, Pa.) and LaVine extended the lead to 14-1, but the contest closed out with Widener outscoring Alvernia 3-2 for the final of 17-3.
Junior attacker
Mike McIlwee (Hicksville, N.Y.) recorded the final two scores for the blue and gold, his first and second tallies of the season.
The Pride overwhelmingly outshot the Crusaders, 38-16, including a 27-9 mark on goal. Also, Widener scooped up 44 groundballs to Alvernia's 23, and the home squad were successful on 15-of-15 clear attempts while holding the visitors to just 10 successful on 19 attempts. Widener also won 18 faceoffs, with Alvernia winning a mere six.
LaVine (3g), Taylor (2g,1a), Richardson (2g,1a), and Sanders (1g,2a) led the Pride with three points each.
Junior
Tyler McClary (Galena, Ohio) earned his second win in goal as he made two saves in the first half without allowing a goal. Junior
Chris Treat (Havertown, Pa.) turned aside four shots while allowing three in 24:55 minutes in cage, and freshman
Mark Marx (Downingtown, Pa.) was between the pipes for the final 5:05 of action without seeing a shot attempt.
The Pride will return after a week-and-a-half respite for a Saturday match-up at Lycoming on Apr. 11 at 1 p.m.
