Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Stunned By Lycoming in Double Overtime, 7-6

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (Apr. 11, 2015) – Despite holding a 6-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter, the Widener men's lacrosse team dropped a 7-6 heartbreaker on the road in double overtime at Commonwealth-rival Lycoming on Saturday afternoon at the Shangraw Complex.

Both teams now hold a 2-2 record in conference action, while Widener dips to 3-8 on the season and Lycoming improves to 2-9.

The first quarter was evenly matched as Lycoming's Jake Wanamaker and the Pride's junior midfielder Marc LaVine (Nashua, N.H.) each sent home an unassisted effort for their squads.  After the Warriors pulled ahead 2-1, LaVine evened the score on a feed from sophomore attacker Clint Sanders (Willow Grove, Pa.) and then Sanders teamed up with freshman midfielder Patrick Richardson (Westville, N.J.) for the visitors' third and fourth goals.

With two more Pride goals coming in the third quarter courtesy of tallies by junior midfielder Anthony Cipriano (Kendall Park, N.J.) and junior midfielder Fred Hew (Walden, N.Y.), the blue and gold held a 6-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

But the Warriors held the Pride off the board in the final period, tying the contest up at 6-6 on three unassisted scores to bring on bonus lacrosse.

After neither side managed to end the game in the first overtime period, Lycoming ended the match-up 23 seconds into the second extra session as Mike Cooper fed Michael Wagner for the game-winner.

Sanders registered a three-point day on two goals and one assist to lead the Widener offense. Junior Tyler McClary (Galena, Ohio) got the start in cage allowing just two goals while turning aside nine shots during the first half of play.  Classmate Chris Treat (Havertown, Pa.) relieved McClary for the second half and overtime sessions, making two saves while allowing five goals in the loss.  For the Warriors, Alex Wylly recorded a game-high 18 saves in net.

Widener held a 42-37 advantage on shots, including a 24-18 edge in shots on goal.  The Pride also scooped up 38 groundballs to the Warriors' 24, and won 10 of 17 face-offs.

The Pride will look to bounce back on Wednesday, Apr. 15 when they host Lebanon Valley for a Commonwealth tilt at Leslie C. Quick Stadium slated to begin at 7 p.m.
