CHESTER, Pa. (Mar. 14, 2015) – With four ticks left on the clock, junior midfielder
Marc LaVine (Nashua, N.H.) beat Dickinson's goalie to send the contest into overtime, but Dickinson immediately answered in the opening seconds of the extra period to seal the 8-7 win over Widener men's lacrosse on Saturday afternoon at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.
Trailing 7-6 with 12 seconds left in regulation, the Pride's (0-6) head coach
Brendan Dawson called a opportune timeout to setup his offense to tie the game. Out of the timeout, freshman midfielder
Patrick Richardson (Westville, N.J.) found LaVine in front of the cage who sent home the game-tying score.
Unfortunately, the score did not remain knotted for long. After winning the opening face-off of the extra session, the Red Devils' (2-3) Chris Menard raced down the field and beat the Pride's
Chris Treat (Havertown, Pa.) to clinch the win for his squad in the sudden-death overtime.
Dickinson opened the contest with a 4-0 run over the first 18 minutes of play with four different Red Devils finding the back of the net. The home squad battled back, rattling off a four-score run of its own to bring the score to 4-4 with 1:43 left in the first half. Sophomore midfielder
Vince Marra (Morton, Pa.) jump-started the offense with an unassisted marker, followed by two tallies by junior attacker
Tim Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.). To cap off the rally, sophomore attacker
Nick Striebich (Ellicott City, Md.) sent home a LaVine helper.
Mitchell Andres gave the visitors a 5-4 edge with an unassisted effort with just 34 seconds left in the third, but just 46 seconds into the final quarter, LaVine dished a feed to Taylor for the junior's third goal of the afternoon.
With the scoreboard reading 5-5 with just over six minutes left in regulation, the two squads went goal-for-goal ending with LaVine's tally with four seconds remaining.
Taylor led the way with three goals on seven shots, while LaVine and Richardson also netted three points each (1g, 2a).
Treat made 11 saves in his 59:55 minutes in cage, while his counterpart Nick Baxter turned aside 13 shots.
The Pride won 10 of 18 face-offs, and held a 20-19 edge in shots on goal. The home squad was 16-of-19 on clear attempts, while the visitors completed 13-of-16.
Dawson and his squad are home once again on Wednesday, Mar. 18. They are set to host New England for a 4 p.m. contest at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.
