CHESTER, Pa. (Mar. 18, 2015) – Behind a scoring attack that saw six different members of the Widener men's lacrosse team notch a goal, the Pride took advantage of a seven-score run during the second half to storm past the University of New England by a score of 12-7 on Wednesday afternoon at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.
Freshman midfielder
Patrick Richardson (Westville, N.J.) didn't waste any time on getting Widener (1-6) on the board as he sunk his first tally of the game just 29 seconds in. After the Nor'easters (3-3) evened the score, the Pride closed out the first quarter with scores by junior midfielder
Marc LaVine (Nashua, N.H.), Richardson, and sophomore midfielder
Vince Marra (Morton, Pa.) to hold a 4-1 advantage after the first quarter.
The visitors answered with a three-straight to knot the score at 4-4 with just under seven minutes left in the first half, but with 50 ticks left to play in the stanza, junior attacker
Tim Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) sent home an unassisted effort to give his squad a one-goal advantage heading into the intermission.
New England came out firing to open the latter half, scoring the first two tallies of the half to take its first lead of the game (6-5) at the 39:54 mark. But then the home squad went on an absolute tear, putting the game out of reach with seven-consecutive notches bookended by unassisted efforts off the stick of junior midfielder
Bryan Shields (Nazareth, Pa.). Also joining in on the action during the run was LaVine, Marra, Taylor, and sophomore attacker
Clint Sanders (Willow Grove, Pa.) who notched his first collegiate goal with 11 minutes to play in the contest.
The visitors battled until the end, as Dan Auger capped off the scoring for the day with an unassisted marker with 39 seconds left on the clock.
Marra led the way with three goals, while LaVine, Taylor, Shields, and Richardson each registered two. LaVine and freshman midfielder
Anthony Paone (Warrington, Pa.) each scooped up a game-high seven ground balls for the Pride.
In goal, junior
Chris Treat (Havertown, Pa.) turned aside 10 shots, while John Dusel recorded 12 saves for the Nor'easters.
Paone was a face-off machine for Widener, winning 18-of-22 attempts.
Widener held the edge in shots, 47-33, including a 24-17 advantage in shots on goal. The Pride collected a total 40 ground balls to New England's 26, and the home squad was successful on 14-of-16 clear attempts while the visitors were 16-of-20.
The Pride will hit the road next week for two games away from Chester. First stop is a battle at Gettysburg on Wednesday, Mar. 25 with play set to start at 3:30 p.m.
