READING, Pa. (Oct. 7, 2015) – Junior Natalie Wilson found the back of the net in the first half as Albright edged the Widener University women's soccer team by a 1-0 score in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action on Wednesday evening at Shirk Stadium.
The match started with play in the middle of the field and neither side managing to penetrate the opposing defense to find a good look. Albright, however, finally broke through in the 32nd minute when Wilson fired the ball to the upper 90 to give the hosts the lead. Widener nearly notched the equalizer in the 37th minute when freshman
Katie Mindnich (Bellingham, Wash.) unleashed a shot, but the ball was punched over the net at the last moment by goalkeeper Payton Bogatch. The Lions cleared the ensuing corner kick and took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Widener came out with a vengeance in the second half and nearly got on the board when a shot by freshman
Stefanie Mindnich (Bellingham, Wash.) hit the post 30 seconds into the frame. The Pride continued to pummel Bogatch with shots throughout the remainder of regulation, which included two more consecutive strikes by Stefanie Mindich in the 58th minute, and unfortunately could not push one past the reigning ECAC South Rookie of the Week.
Bogatch made six saves between the pipes to help Albright (6-4-2, MACC 2-0) notch its fourth straight shutout win. The Pride's
Olivia Pfautz (Ephrata, Pa.) turned away six shots in the losing effort.
Widener (4-6-1, MACC 0-2) will look to break out of a two-match skid when it visits Stevenson on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 4:00 p.m.
