CHESTER, Pa. (Oct. 27, 2015) – Alvernia scored three times in the second half to record a 3-1 victory over the Widener University women's soccer team on Tuesday evening at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.
Alvernia improved to 5-12-1 overall and 3-4 in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play, while Widener slid to 5-10-1 overall and 1-6 in league action.
After a scoreless first half, Alvernia got off to a quick start coming out of the break and broke the scoreless tie when Johnna Shank took a hard shot off a pass from Kayla McNamee. Bailey Stover doubled the lead in the 60th on a breakaway opportunity, and Melissa Stahl put the match away when she stole the ball from the Widener defense and sent the ball past freshman
Mikaela Malofiy (Horsham, Pa.).
The Pride did not go down without a fight and avoided the shutout by finding the back of the net in the final minute. Freshman
Brandy Toso (Millville, N.J.) sent a pass inside the box that was finished by classmate
Katie Mindnich (Bellingham, Wash.).
Alvernia's Jessica Plunkett turned away nine shots to pick up the victory. Malofiy, who was making her first collegiate appearance between the pipes, made nine saves for the Pride in the setback.
