WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (Oct. 31, 2015) – Sophomore Brooke Palmeiri (Erial, N.J.) registered her first career goal and added an assist in leading the Widener University women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Lycoming on Saturday afternoon at the Shangraw Athletic Complex. The Pride scored three goals in the first half and held off a late charge by the Warriors to finish their 2015 season on a high note.
Widener improved to 6-10-1 overall, including 2-6 in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth play, with the victory. Lycoming saw its season come to an end with a 9-9 ledger overall and an identical 2-6 mark in league action.
The Pride began their offensive barrage in the 13th minute, as freshman Stefanie Mindich (Bellingham, Wash.) sent home a rebound off a clear attempt from 30 yards away. After Mindnich nearly scored again just one minute after her initial marker, Palmieri doubled the lead in the 29th minute by converting a penalty kick. Junior Karli Lucker (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) then finished a pass from Palmieri off a corner kick to give the visitors a commanding 3-0 lead at the break.
Lycoming staged a furious comeback attempt in the second half and netted its first goal in the 59th minute when Katie Cox buried a shot into the left corner of the net. Less than three minutes later, Meghenn Jackson found the back of the net to make it a one-possession match at 3-2. The Warriors continued to pummel Pride goalkeeper
Olivia Pfautz (Ephrata, Pa.) with shots throughout the second half, but the senior came away with four saves after surrendering the second goal to allow the hosts to escape with the win.
Pfautz turned away eight shots for Widener in her final collegiate match to pick up the win. She also finished with 204 career saves, which ranks fifth in the program annals. Lycoming's Helen Ross stopped two shots and suffered the loss.
Widener is slated to return 19 letterwinners and 10 starters next season.
