GLENSIDE, Pa. (Oct. 25, 2015) – Freshman
Brielle Errico (Monmouth Junction, N.J.) scored her fifth goal of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Widener University women's soccer team suffered a 3-1 setback on the road against Arcadia on Sunday afternoon at Easton Field.
Arcadia improved to 11-5 overall and 4-2 in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action, while Widener dropped to 5-9-1 overall and 1-5 in league play.
The Knights came out strong and scored their first goal in the ninth minute when Jackie Glanfield sent a cross from the right endline to Tara Smith, who fired a shot inside the left post to make it 1-0. Arcadia led by the same margin at recess.
Widener's best chance to score came in the second half when the team was awarded a corner kick in the 56th minute. Sophomore
Kelliann Burns (Clarksboro, N.J.) collected a clear attempt at the top of the box and unleashed a shot that was headed for the upper 90, but goalkeeper Evelyn Feigeles leaped up and backwards to make the diving save. A header by freshman
Shea Scannell (Linwood, N.J.) on the ensuing corner was blocked, and Fiegeles stuffed a shot by freshman
Stefanie Mindnich (Bellingham, Wash.) to keep the hosts ahead.
After the Pride came up just short of tying the match, the Knights were able to add two insurance tallies within 67 seconds of each other to put the match out of reach. Kayla Haberbosch and Smith each scored in the 80th and 81st minutes, respectively.
Despite surrendering two quick goals, Widener kept fighting and was able to get on the board before time expired. Errico won a loose ball among multiple Knight defenders and fired a rocket to the upper 90 of the net to make it 3-1 with 1:23 left and produce the final outcome.
Feigeles picked up the victory for Arcadia by making five saves which all came in the second half. The Pride's
Olivia Pfautz (Ephrata, Pa.) was charged with the loss after turning away eight shots in over 76 minutes of action. Burns, who has started every match on the back line, relieved Pfautz for the remainder of the match and made one stop in her debut between the pipes.
Widener will play its final home game of the 2015 campaign when it hosts Alvernia on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 7:00 p.m.
