Baseball Makes it Eight Straight Wins After Sweep of Albright

(Game 1) (Game 2)

Widener swept Albright, 9-3 and 7-1, on a Saturday doubleheader in Chester, PA on the shoulders of sophomore Joe Santone (Blackwood, NJ) and senior Colin Weiss (Red Hill, PA).

Widener (19-9, 11-4 CC) led by its starting pitchers and consistent offensive hitting, swept the three-game series to complete its third Commonwealth Conference sweep of the season.

Santone pitched six solid innings in the first game of the afternoon, striking out four batters and allowing only two earned runs to improve to 4-2 on the year.

Offensively, freshman Michael Elfreth (Washington Twp, NJ) got the ball rolling for the Pride in the second inning by smashing a ball down the right field line that scored both senior Sam Christie (Upper Darby, PA) and freshman Justin Healey (Ocean City, NJ).  Elfreth later scored on a wild pitch in the dirt by pitcher Alex Myers.

Already the conference leader in hits, Elfreth went 2-of-3 in the first game with two runs and three RBI and 3-of-4 in the second game with one run and one RBI.  Elfreth now has 49 hits with 30 runs and a .441 batting average in his freshman campaign to lead the Pride.

Widener scored four runs in the second inning followed by two in the third and three in the fifth.  Christie scored in each of those three innings to lead the Pride with two hits, a walk and three runs.  Christie returned in the second game as well to go 2-of-2 with two runs.

The big hitters for the Pride were freshman Bob Barnett (Glenolden, PA) and senior Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA), who each batted in two runs in the first of two victories on the day.

In the second game, Weiss hurled his third complete game in a row with six strikeouts and one earned run.  Weiss improves to 4-0 on the season with a team-best 2.27 ERA and 34 strikeouts.

Albright took the lead 1-0 in the top of the first inning when Nate Peiffer singled to bring home Zachary Keibler.

The Pride returned with four runs in the third inning, highlighted by Christie beating a throw at the plate and a two-run double by freshman Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, NJ).

Albright has some scoring opportunities, but Widener's defense made some great plays to maintain the lead.

In the sixth inning, Widener secured the victory with three more runs featuring an RBI single from Elfreth and a RBI double from Barnett.  Barnett finished 2-of-4 with an RBI.

Widener will be back in action in non-conference action against Johns Hopkins on Monday at 3:30 pm in Chester, PA.
