Baseball Makes It Six Straight Wins With 10-3 Triumph at Albright

(box score)

Junior Robert Barth (Norristown, PA) tossed another gem on the mound and his teammates gave him plenty of help with six runs in the fourth inning for a 10-3 Widener triumph over Commonwealth Conference foe Albright in Reading, PA.

The aforementioned scoring barrage gave Widener a 6-1 lead.  The runs began when senior Sam Christie (Upper Darby, PA) lined an RBI single to right and continued when a single from freshman Michael Elfreth (Washington Twp., NJ) allowed Christie and freshman Justin Healey (Ocean City, NJ) to cross home for a 3-1 margin.

Senior Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) ripped an RBI double to plate Barnett and junior Matt Scherer (Havertown, PA) had a single that scored Riverso and freshman Bob Barnett for a 6-1 margin.

The Lions (7-9, 5-6 CC) closed to 6-3 before the Pride (17-9, 9-4) got three more in the sixth for a 9-3 cushion.  Riverso added another RBI single, freshman Nicholas Enos (Williamstown, NJ) lined a run-scoring single and junior Edward Speakman (Chichester, PA) added an RBI single.

Barth (5-1) had more than enough to work with in going seven innings, marking the sixth time this season he has pitched at least that many frames.  He struck out four and allowed just three runs – two earned – and six hits over seven innings.

Riverso had three hits for his 10th multi-hit game of the season and two RBI for his team-best ninth multi-RBI contest this year.  Healey also had three hits as part of the Pride's 19-hit attack.

Jared Neiheiser (1-2) was tagged for six runs – two earned – and 11 hits over four innings for Albright.  Evan High closed with two hits.

Widener, riding its longest winning streak since 2011, moves into a first-place tie with Alvernia and both are one game clear of third place Lebanon Valley and Messiah (8-5).

Widener and Albright will play a doubleheader Saturday in Chester, starting at noon.
