Women's Basketball Falls Short, 60-53, to Elizabethtown

(box score)

Senior guard Joanna Persiano (Ventnor, NJ) scored a season-high 21 points as Widener fell to Elizabethtown, 60-53, on Wednesday night in Commonwealth Conference play at Schwartz Center.

Widener (12-10, 7-8 CC) previously faced Elizabethtown on December 4, resulting in a 76-62 setback.

Elizabethtown took an early lead with the help of Taylor Kreider's nine first-half points. Persiano kept the Pride in reaching distance by scoring eight first-half points and dishing two assists. Persiano finished with a team-leading five assists to go with three steals and shooting 7-of-18 from the floor.

Going into the locker room, the Pride trailed 27-18. In the first half, Widener outrebounded Elizabethtown 33-21 as senior Jen Egee (Ridley Park, PA) and sophomore Brianna Wylie (Mount Laurel, NJ) each brought down eight boards.

Widener fought to within two points on Wylie's layup with nine minutes remaining. Wylie was all over the place with eight points, one assist, one steal, and one block. The Pride stayed in reaching distance, but the free-throw ability of the Blue Jays proved too much as they hit 7-for-11 after intermission.

Elizabethtown put itself in a tie for second place in the league.  Widener falls into a tie for fifth place with three games remaining in the regular season.

Egee secured her third straight double-double and sixth of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds, moving into sixth place in school history with 1,256 points.  She continues to lead the conference and rank 16th in the nation with 21.5 points per game.

Junior guard Paige Davis (Newark, DE) came off the bench to energize the Pride by adding three steals, four points and four rebounds.

Elizabethtown (17-4, 11-4) was led by Rachel Forjan with 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Taylor Kreider went 6-of-10 for 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists, and Taylor Alwine finished with six points, six rebounds, one block and one steal.

Widener returns to the Schwartz Center on Saturday to take on Alvernia in conference action. The women begin at 1:00 pm on Senior Day and the men follow at 3:00 pm.
