Women's Swimming Falls Short Against Scranton

Sophomore Ian Gaynor (Donegal, Ireland) broke the school and Middle Atlantic Conference record in the 50-yard freestyle, as men's swimming defeated Scranton 160-102. Women's swimming earned first place finishes, but could not defeat Scranton as Widener fell 168-93.
 
Gaynor finished the 50-yard freestyle in a record time of 20.60. The sophomore bested his own record accomplished last year at the MAC Championships.
 
Gaynor also finished first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.62. The sophomore anchored the 200-yard medley relay to a first place finish of 1:39.97. The relay consisted of senior Andrew Olchowecky (Philadelphia, Pa), junior Andy Madore (State College, Pa) and sophomore Jeffery Hicks (White Haven, Pa).
 
Hicks recorded a second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle and a first place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. The sophomore finished in 1:51.03, just a second behind classmate Michael Grajek (Freehold, NJ). Hicks won the butterfly with a time of 57.30.
 
On the women's side, freshman Christine Kunzler (Livermore, CA) won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:04.37. Kunzler also helped the Pride to a second place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:57.86. The medley relay consisted of junior Annie Walker (New Castle, DE) and sophomores Erin Neugebauer (Eden Prairie, MN) and Melaney Heald (Georgetown, DE).
 
Heald placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:04.46. Neugebauer earned a first place finish in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:19.62.
 
Widener will compete next on Saturday when they host Albright at 1:00 pm for Alumni and MAC Recognition Day.
