Women's Basketball Stunned, 76-75, at Albright

(box score)

Senior Jen Egee (Ridley Park, PA) set career highs with 36 points and seven 3-pointers to help Widener built a 20-point second-half lead, only to see Albright mount a furious comeback that was capped by Shannon Thomas' layup for a stunning 76-75 Commonwealth Conference loss.

Egee went on a tear in the opening half, scoring 17 points with three 3-pointers to give Widener a commanding 42-23 lead.  Junior Kristina Reiter (Sewell, NJ) had 10 points and five rebounds in the half, sophomore Brianna Wylie (Mount Laurel, NJ) netted eight points and junior Courtney Colella (Cinnaminson, NJ) added seven rebounds.

Widener shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the field in the half and went 7-for-7 from the line.  Albright was limited to just 37 percent shooting (11-of-30) from the floor and only was 1-for-5 from the stripe.

Even with the comeback well underway, the Pride looked in great shape when Egee canned a 3-pointer with 2:09 remaining for a 71-65 lead.  After Kelecia Harris made a layup with 1:48 to play for a four-point cushion, Egee buried another from beyond the arc with 1:37 left for a 74-67 margin.

Harris made one free throw with 1:22 remaining for a 74-68 contest before Widener sophomore Brianna Wylie (Mount Laurel, NJ) followed suit with 68 seconds to play for a seven-point game.

Amanda Tiritilli made things interesting on a 3-pointer with 56 seconds left for a 75-71 Albright deficit and, following a turnover from Widener junior Paige Davis (Newark, DE), knocked down another triple with 37 seconds remaining for a one-point margin.

Davis then missed two free throws that set up the Lady Lions for their only lead of the game.  Harris worked the clock down before finding Thomas, whose layup with nine seconds left made it 76-75.

Widener, which held a 45-25 lead in the opening minute of the second half, had one final chance with two seconds left following its last timeout.  Colella got the ball, but committed a turnover that ended Widener's six-game winning streak against Albright.

Egee bested the 34 points she scored January 15 at Alvernia and the six 3-pointers accomplished twice.  The output vaults her all the way up to eighth place on Widener's career scoring list as she now stands at 1,169 points.

It also is the ninth time this season Egee has scored at least 20 points.

Reiter had 13 points and six rebounds, Wylie poured in 11 points and Colella hauled in eight rebounds for the Pride (10-7, 5-5 CC), who are now tied for fifth place with the Lady Lions (11-6, 5-5) in the conference.

Harris put on a show of her own with 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting and 12 rebounds for Albright, which shot 61 percent (19-of-31) from the field in the second half and 49 percent (30-of-61) overall.  Thomas poured in 16 points, Tiritilli scored 10 and Kadijah Bishop grabbed 14 rebounds.

Widener continues its three-game road trip Wednesday at Lebanon Valley, starting at 6:00 pm.
