Field Hockey Scores First, But Loses in the End to Cabrini 3-1

(box score)

Widener led at halftime, but could not carry that momentum into the second half and endured a loss to Cabrini 3-1 at Edith R. Dixon Field.

Cabrini came out from the opening whistle with a great deal of intensity. The Cavaliers had their opportunities, but they were swiftly rejected by the Widener defense. Freshman goalie Mikayla Ninos (Northampton, PA), starting her first game, made five saves in the first half alone.

Widener (3-4) took the lead in the 23rd minute when senior Hannah Robinson (Clarksville, MD) stole the ball away from a defender and passed it from the left side into the Cabrini crease. Goalie Genevieve Paulin stepped out in an attempt to kick the ball from her zone, but sophomore Meghan Garvey (Avondale, PA) got her stick on the ball and then found the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season. Garvey leads the Commonwealth Conference in goals for the third week in a row.

In the 44th minute, Cabrini was able to tie the score off a goal from Erin McLaughlin. The ball was crossed into the Widener zone, Ninos came out and cleared the ball, but McLaughlin picked up the deflection and fired the ball into the goal.

Two minutes later Kerry Anne Farrell found Karlie Gruccio right in front of the net to take the lead 2-1 in favor of the Cavaliers.

In the 52nd minute Mclaughlin carried the ball down the middle, was able to get past a Widener defender and found Taylor Mack running in from the right. Mack one-timed the ball into the left side of the net and gave Cabrini the two-goal lead.

Robinson along with freshman Dana Adamson (Warrington, PA) and senior Hannah Dinsmore (Wayne, PA) each managed a defensive save for the Pride, but Cabrini was able to capatilize on their opportunities and leave with a victory.

Widener will next travel to Delaware Valley on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
