Baseball Splits at Arcadia

Widener got great all-around play to notch a 5-1 victory over Arcadia in the opener of its Commonwealth Conference doubleheader before it was handed a 10-9 loss in the nightcap in Cheltenham, PA.
 
Widener (6-8, 2-2 CC) in the first game plated three runs in the top of the first inning.  Sophomore Marc Noyalis (Dallas, PA) ripped a two-run double to right center and senior Dennis Hocker (Coral Spring, FL), who has a hit in 12 of the team's 14 games this season, added an RBI single.
 
Senior Brendan O'Brien (Coatesville, PA) had an RBI single in the fourth to make it 4-1 and sophomore Matt Scherer (Havertown, PA) added a run-scoring single in the seventh for the final.
 
Scherer, O'Brien, Noyalis and Hocker all had two hits for the Pride.  Norristown, PA sophomore Robert Barth (2-1) struck out six over seven innings, yielding one run and six hits.
 
Jack Nazarewycz gave up three runs and three hits over 1 2/3 innings for the Knights (10-6-1, 3-1).  Justin Simpson had two hits and Jay Zehring lined an RBI single in the second.
 
Trailing 7-6 entering the sixth inning of game two, Widener plated three runs in the top of the frame to open a 9-7 lead.  O'Brien had the big blow with a two-run double to left and junior Kyle Summers (Mohnton, PA) also scored on the play thanks to an error from left fielder Kyle Jackson.
 
But the Knights scored twice in the bottom half for a 9-9 tie.  Nick Petroski had an infield single to make it a one-run game and Simpson followed with a single to plate George Pagan.
 
Arcadia then won it in the last of the seventh.  Michael Nessel was hit by a pitch to lead off, took second on Zehring's single and scored on Jackson's fielder's choice as a result of an error.
 
Junior Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) went 4-for-4 with an RBI double for the Pride as he and Summers each extended their hitting streaks to six games.  O'Brien and senior Matt Hone (Newtown, PA) each had two hits and two RBI.
 
Red Hill, PA junior Colin Weiss (0-1) was charged with four runs – one earned – and five hits over three innings for the Pride.
 
Nick Petroski had three hits with Simpson getting two and two RBI for Arcadia.  Zehring got the win after striking out four over two innings despite yielding three unearned runs.
 
Widener plays its rescheduled doubleheader at Lebanon Valley on Sunday, starting at noon in Annville, PA.
