Men's and Women's Swimming Fall Short of F&M

(men's results) / (women's results)

Widener's men's and women's swimming both were defeated (men 120-83, women 122-80) by Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster, PA on Saturday.

One week after competing at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational, the squads traveled back to Lancaster to take on the Diplomats in non-conference action.

The Widener men won both relays on the day to go along with three individual wins.

The 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Ian Gaynor (Donegal, Ireland), senior Michael Lawley (Philadelphia, PA) to go along with sophomores Andy Madore (State College, PA) and Stephen Ranalli (Wildwood, NJ) began the afternoon by winning the race in a time of 1:39.31, defeating F&M by over three seconds.

The Pride captain, Lawley, came back after the relay to win the 100-yard backstroke in 54.97.

Gaynor, after setting two school records a week ago, swam first in the 100-yard freestyle in 46.73, defeating the next closest competitor by two seconds and nearly breaking his own school record.

Madore would return to the pool to win the 100-yard backstroke in 1:03.25 and place fourth in the 200 individual-medley in 2:10.25.

Lawley, Gaynor along with freshmen Jeremy Lahn (Philadelphia, PA) and Jeffrey Hicks (White Haven, PA) finished the day with a first-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:16.92. This time stands only five seconds short of the school record set back in 2008.

On the women's side, Widener would again win both the relays, and senior All-American Laura Harris (Phoenix, MD) would add two more individual victories to her record.

The 200-yard medley relay team consisting of seniors Harris, Jennifer Barkofski (Norristown, PA) and Sara Leonelli (Vineland, NJ) along with sophomore Annie Walker (New Castle, DE) defeated F&M's squad by three seconds in 1:56.58.

Harris would then go on to win both the 50 and 100 freestyle events in 25.23 and 54.71 respectively.

Barkofski would then finish third in the 200 individual-medley in 2:20.75, followed by a third place finish from Leonelli in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:03.73.

To finish off the day the 400 freestyle relay team of Leonelli, Walker, fellow senior Carly Wray (Ocean View, NJ) and freshman Erin Neugebauer (Eden Prairie, MN) swam first in 3:53.91 to conclude the meet.

Widener will compete in its renovated pool for the first time against Cabrini on January 11 at 1:00 pm.
