Women's Basketball Loses Conference Game, 76-62, to Elizabethtown

(box score)

Widener fought hard till the end before suffering its first Commonwealth Conference loss, 76-62 at Elizabethtown on Wednesday night.

Widener (3-2, 1-1 CC) entered into the contest with junior captain Ally Ferrucci (Vineland, NJ) sidelined with an injury.  Despite not having their starting point guard, the Pride took an early lead in the first half.  However, the Blue Jays' accurate shooting and powerful rebounding led Elizabethtown (5-0, 2-0) to an 11-point lead at halftime.

After drifting into foul trouble and falling to a 24-point deficit early in the second half, Widener redeemed itself and fought hard to pull within 72-62 with two minutes remaining.  The Pride would eventually suffer their first conference loss of the season by 14 points to the Blue Jays.

Senior guard Joanna Persiano (Ventnor, NJ) had her best offensive game of the season by scoring a game-high 19 points, shooting 5-of-6 from the line and dishing three assists.  Defensively, Persiano added four rebounds and tying a team-lead with two steals.

Fellow senior Jen Egee (Ridley Park, PA) scored 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting and pulled down seven rebounds.  The captain continued to be a force at both ends of the court, dishing out one assist and gathering up one steal.

Taking on the responsibilities at point guard, freshman Leilani Beckham (Aldan, PA) scored seven points to go with a team-leading five assists.  Beckham, in her first collegiate start, also added two rebounds and one steal.

Leading the team with eight rebounds, sophomore Brianna Wylie (Mount Laurel, NJ) came off the bench to also add six points and two steals.

Playing all but five minutes of the game, junior Kristina Reiter (Sewell, NJ), scored 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting, and gathered up six rebounds.

The Pride return to action on Saturday against Lebanon Valley at 1:00 pm in Schwartz Center.
