Women’s Basketball Opens League Play with 70-56 Triumph Over Albright

(box score)

Widener overcame a feisty bunch from Albright and saw senior Jen Egee (Ridley Park, PA) again hit some big shots for a 70-56 victory at Schwartz Center in both teams Commonwealth Conference opener.

The Pride appeared to have the game in hand early in the second half when a 10-2 run gave them a 48-32 lead with 12:40 left. Junior Ally Ferrucci (Vineland, NJ) and senior Joanna Persiano (Ventnor, NJ) each had five points in that span with Ferrucci capping it on an old-fashioned three-point play.

The Lady Lions would not go away, going on a 9-2 spurt to close to 58-51 with 3:20 remaining. Meghan Boyle was one of four for Albright to net two points in that run, ending it with a layup.

That was when Egee, who now is averaging a team-best 19.0 points a game, helped decide the outcome. After Egee missed the second of two free throws, Boyle got the rebound and looked for help. But all she could find was Egee, who tied her up causing a jump ball and giving Widener possession thanks to the arrow.

Egee made the most of that possession, hitting a layup with 2:59 left for a 60-51 contest. After getting another steal on Albright's next possession, she buried a 3-pointer with 2:24 remaining for a 12-point game that all but ended things.

Egee poured in a season-best 22 points, two short of her career high set November 28, 2012 against Elizabethtown. She shot 8-of-19 from the floor and added eight rebounds over 33 minutes.

Persiano scored a season-high 17 points, Ferrucci had 12 and seven assists and junior Courtney Colella (Cinnaminson, NJ) amassed eight points and eight rebounds for the Pride.

Widener (3-1, 1-0 CC), playing its earliest league opener in 19 years, shot 46 percent (13-of-28) from the field in the second half and had a 44-34 overall rebounding edge.

Kelecia Harris had 21 points and 11 rebounds with Jessica Venturelli adding nine points for Albright (2-2, 0-1), which shot 35 percent (9-of-26) from the floor in the second half and was just 3-of-13 from beyond the arc.

Widener has eight days before its next contest, a league game Wednesday, December 4 at Elizabethtown that starts at 6:00 pm.
