Women's Soccer Does It Again, Defeating F&M 1-0 in Overtime

(box score) / (video highlights)

Senior forward Karen Thomas (Mullica Hill, NJ) scored in the second minute of overtime against Franklin & Marshall to bring Widener's winning streak to 10 and its unbeaten run to 11 with a 1-0 triumph in Lancaster, PA.

Widener (10-0-1), after defeating DeSales in overtime on Saturday, pulled the same result Tuesday. The Pride extend the longest winning streak in school history and broke the record for their longest unbeaten run, besting the mark accomplished in 1995 and 2010.

Both teams had goal-scoring opportunities but neither was able to net a goal in the 90 minutes of regulation.

In the 60th minute, a scary moment happened for the Pride when F&M forward Spencer Plante took a breakaway shot 12 yards from the goal. Senior goalkeeper Valarie Perretti (Clayton, NJ) stood her ground, got her hands on the ball and deflected the ball upwards. The ball hit off the cross bar, bounced down and Perretti was able to jump on it before any opposing player connected with the ball. Perretti finished with three saves in the contest.

One minute and 32 seconds into overtime, junior Jenna Pedrick (Sicklerville, NJ) carried the ball down the right side and crossed the ball into the middle. Thomas came running down the left side and received the ball at the top of the box. Thomas took a touch and fired the ball past goalie Amanda McGowan for her ninth goal of the year.

Thomas continues to lead the Pride in goals this season and Pedrick recorded her third assist on the year, good for second on the team.

Spencer Plante took six shots for the Diplomats (4-2-2).

Widener returns home and looks to continue its streaks on Saturday against Alvernia at 4:00 pm.
