Women’s Basketball Leaves No Doubt In 72-35 Win Over Alvernia

(boxscore)
Widener hosted Alvernia in game one of a men's and women's doubleheader and never trailed, winning with a final of 72-35 in tonight's Commonwealth Conference match-up.

The game started off with Vanessa Hejnas (Delran, NJ) winning the tip by getting the ball to fellow senior and captain Francesca Lee (Hainesport, NJ). Alvernia (4-7, 2-4 CC) turned the ball over on its first possession after the Pride's defense forced a shot clock violation. Lee scored the first point of the game on a free throw one minute into play. Over the next minute and a half, Widener (11-3, 6-1) scored seven more points before Crusader Chelsea Ebersole got her team on the board with a three-point field goal with 17 minutes remaining in the first half. Within the next nine minutes, bringing the game to the 8:30 left in the first, Widener sank 14 more points before Ebersole hit another three-pointer to make the score 22-6.

Close to seven minutes left in the first, junior Jennifer Egee (Ridley Park, PA) and sophomore Kristina Reiter (Sewell, NJ) hit back-to-back 3-pointers. At halftime, the score sat 34-14 in favor of Widener.

Lee got the scoring started again in the second half with a layup in the paint, followed by another 3-pointer from Ebersole. Sophomore Ally Ferrucci (Vineland, NJ) found Lee with a pass in the paint, good for two points, and followed it up with a steal and pass to senior Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA), whose layup tipped off the rim and was picked up by Lee who put it in for two. In a nearly identical play, Ferrucci had another steal—one of three on the night for her—and rounded the rim with a layup that was eventually put in by sophomore Courtney Colella (Cinnaminson, NJ), making the score 46-24.

Junior Joanna Persiano (Absecon, NJ) and Egee met up for two back-to-back 3-pointers one minute apart, with Persiano bucketing both. A few minutes later, Persiano saw Reiter across the court and fed her the ball for a 3-pointer. In the last five minutes of play, each team scored five points, but Widener was ultimately victorious.

For the game Lee and Egee each totaled 10 points, with Lee shooting 4-of-5 in field goals, 2-for-4 at the line to go with eight rebounds and three steals. Dellinger led the team with 12 points, shooting 5-of-12 in field goals and 2-of-2 in 3-pointers to go with a team-leading 10 rebounds. Ferrucci picked up three steals and four assists with senior Lil Carney (Narberth, PA) adding three assists of her own. Persiano and Reiter each hit 2-of-3 attempted 3-pointers, with Persiano leading the team with five assists.

For Alvernia, Stevie Fortna and Ebersole led the scoring with 10 and nine points, respectively. Alisa Greco and Mya Lobb had three assists apiece with Greco adding two steals and Lobb getting three.

Widener on Saturday travels to Frederick, MD to take on Hood in another Commonwealth Conference game beginning at 1:00 pm.
