Women's Basketball Headed Back to Conference Tournament Thanks to 87-64 Win at Stevenson

(box score)

Senior Vanessa Hejnas (Delran, NJ) scored a season-best 20 points and was perfect from both the floor and the line for Widener, which clinched a spot in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament with an 87-64 win at Stevenson in Owings Mills, MD.

Widener in the first half went on a 20-2 run in just over eight minutes to grab a 29-21 lead with 4:07 left.  In a burst during which seven different players scored, Hejnas, senior Lil Carney (Narberth, PA) and junior Jennifer Egee (Ridley Park, PA) each netted four points.

The Pride then settled matters with a 15-2 spurt in the opening four minutes of the second half for a 49-31 cushion.  Hejnas put in seven of her 13 second-half points in that span.

Hejnas shot 7-of-7 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the line over just 19 minutes, falling one point shy of her career best from November 15, 2011 against Swarthmore.

Egee was a force off the bench with 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting and three 3-pointers, Carney amassed 16 points and nine rebounds, Francesca Lee (Hainesport, NJ) scored 11 points and fellow senior Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA) hauled in 14 rebounds for the Pride.  Dellinger now has averaged 13.3 rebounds over her last three contests.

Widener in the second half shot 59 percent (16-of-27) from the floor vs. just 39 percent (13-of-33) for Stevenson.  The Pride hit for 52 percent (28-of-54) overall that included 24-of-44 from two-point range.

Stephanie Martinez scored 17 points, Kayla Kelly netted 10 and Sam Murray added nine for the Mustangs (7-10, 4-8 CC).

Widener (16-4, 11-2) goes to the conference tournament for a sixth straight year and remains tied for second in the league with Lebanon Valley (11-2).  The Pride also equal the school record for most conference victories.

The Pride are home Saturday against Hood at 1:00 pm in their annual “Play 4Kay” contest.  Donations will be accepted for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund in hopes of finding a cure for breast cancer.
