Baseball Rallies For 9-5 Victory at Arcadia

(box score)

Senior Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) clubbed two home runs, including a huge three-run shot to get things going for Widener in a crucial 9-5 Commonwealth Conference victory over Arcadia in Philadelphia.

Down 4-0 entering the third, Widener turned to the meat of the batting order and Sieracki delivered.  His three-run blast to center was just what the Pride needed as it closed to 4-3.

Jay Zehring lined an RBI single in the bottom of the third to give Arcadia a 5-3 lead.  But junior Matt Hone (Newtown, PA) lifted a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Sieracki hit a solo homer to left in the fifth for a 5-5 tie.

Sieracki now has five home runs on the season, 22 for his career and it was his third career multi-homer game.

Widener took its first lead, 6-5, in the seventh on a fielder's choice groundout from junior Dennis Hocker (Coral Springs, FL).  Senior Bill Hollingsworth (Drexel Hill, PA) added an RBI single later in the frame and junior Brendan O'Brien (Coatesville, PA) had a run-scoring double in the eighth to make it 8-5.

Sieracki ended with four RBI as he, O'Brien, Hollingsworth and senior Sean Saverio (Hatboro, PA) all had two hits apiece.  The two, three and four hitters in the lineup of O'Brien, Saverio and Sieracki combined to go 6-for-11 with five RBI and six runs.

O'Brien extended his hitting streak to seven games and is batting .458 (11-for-24) during that stretch.

Norristown, PA freshman Robert Barth (2-1) pitched 6 1/3 scoreless relief innings, yielding just six hits with three strikeouts for the Pride.

Kyle Jackson and Mike McElhatton each had three hits for the Knights.  Johan Van Bemmelen (0-1) was charged with three runs and two hits over 2 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.

The win moves Widener (15-11, 5-5 CC) into a tie with Arcadia (11-14, 5-5) for third place in the conference.  The teams play again Saturday in a doubleheader in Chester, PA that begins at noon.
